EU suspects Iran’s spy attack on German MPs

The German Green politician Hannah Neumann is committed to oppression and violence in Iran in the European Parliament. Now she was a victim a cyber attack. All tracks lead in one direction.

The European Parliament has confirmed indications of an Iranian espionage attack against German MEP Hannah Neumann. The examination of a cyber attack on the Greens politician’s office showed that the way the implementation of great similarities to the methods of Iranian, state-supported cyber spy groups has learned the German press agency from the office of parliamentary president Roberta Metsola. The aim of the attack was probably to get information about the work and contacts of Neumann.

Neumann told the dpa that the background of the attack was probably her commitment to human rights and democracy in Iran. According to her, he was probably committed by a hacker group called “Charming Kitten”, which is supposed to work for the Iranian revolutionary guards. Neumann is the head of the delegation for the relationships between parliament to the people in Iran and has been calling for the revolutionary guards as a terrorist organization for years.

Professional attempt to deceive

According to the German politician, the attackers have contacted their office under a false identity over several weeks and tried to install spy software via a link. Fortunately, the parliamentary IT defense system worked and it could be prevented that the attackers could spy on information.

According to Neumann, the incident was investigated after the German constitutional protection proved that it was informed about a possible attack. The 41-year-old then alerted the parliament, which then started her own research.

Parliamentary President Torture Attack

The Metsola office states that as a result of the incident, Parliament’s security services have been asked to exercise special vigilance. The President strongly condemned such an attack on a chosen member of the European Parliament.

For the European Parliament, the alleged spy case is the second big within a short time. It was only in April that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had charged a former employee of AfD politician Maximilian Krah for espionage for a Chinese secret service. The man is said to have repeatedly passed on information about negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament and spied on Chinese opposition figures in Germany for the intelligence service. He is also accused of compiling information about leading AfD politicians.

The “time” had already reported on the espionage attack on Neumann last month. At that time, however, the European Parliament did not comment on the case because the analysis had not yet been completed.
