US judge brakes Trump’s Harvard plans

The Elite University Harvard without international students-US President Trump wants that. The university defends itself legally – and can breathe a sigh of relief. However, only for the time being.

Success for Harvard in court: A judge has given the elite university right and initially stopped the US government’s project to exclude foreign students. Harvard had only filed an action hours beforehand. Judge Allison D. Burroughs came to the conclusion that the elite university had demonstrated that the government’s order meant an “immediate and irreparable damage” for Harvard.

Harvard is a thorn in the side of Trump

The judge’s decision should only be the first step in a long legal dispute. It is not a final judgment. According to the will of the government of US President Donald Trump, Harvard should no longer be allowed to accept new students from abroad as part of a special federal program. Foreigners already registered would have to switch to other universities – otherwise they will lose their residence status in the United States.

The Trump government justifies its procedure with propalestinian protests at US universities. Univers schools like Harvard are accused of not being decisively tackled and tolerated anti -Semitic incidents on campus. Harvard, on the other hand, accuses Trump’s government of wanting to put the university under pressure with an illegal retaliation measure.

Germans also study in Harvard

“With a stroke, the government tries to exclude a quarter of Harvard’s student body – international students who contribute significantly to the university and their mandate,” says the university’s application. The more than 7,000 affected people – and their relatives – had become game characters in the escalating retaliation campaign of the government.

The preliminary injunction imposed by the judge now prevents the government from banning the university to continue to include students from abroad through a special federal program.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, a three -digit number of Germans are enrolled in Harvard. A spokesman did not give a more precise number. The Federal Foreign Office announced discussions with the United States about the effects that would have the desired rejection of foreigners at the university on German students.
