USA begin with loosening the Syria sanctions

All US sanctions against Syria are to be lifted. President Trump announced this on his trip to the Middle East. Now the first reliefs come.

The US government has started to suspend sanctions against Syria. The aim is to promote new investments in Syria and help the country to achieve peace and stability, finance Minister Scott Bessent said.

US President Donald Trump announced last week on his trip to the Middle East that the United States wanted to overturn all sanctions against Syria. Syria’s new leadership has been trying to approach the international community since the fall of long-term power holder Bashar al-Assad and calls for the abolition of all sanctions. During the years of brutal civil war under Assad, many countries of Syria had occupied sanctions.

With the abolition of the economic sanctions, the path for new investments and financial services as well as for transactions in connection with oil or oil products that came from Syria would be stated, the US Ministry of Finance said. Transactions with the new Syrian government and with transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa as well as with the Syrian central bank and other banks would also be allowed.

Furthermore, transactions from which Russia, Iran or North Korea benefit are not approved. It is also prohibited to do business with people or companies that had previously been occupied with sanctions and have now not been explicitly excluded.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also informed about the suspension of further sanctions for 180 days. The aim of this is to ensure that sanctions did not prevent partners in the United States from making stability -promoting investments in Syria. The suspensions made it easier to provide electricity and water and enabled more effective humanitarian aid in Syria.

Finance Minister: Want to promote new investments in Syria

“As promised by President Trump, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs implement approvals to promote new investments in Syria,” said Finance Minister Bessent. Syria must continue to work to become a stable country where peace prevails. Today’s measures would “hopefully” contribute to this.
