In North Korea, the stacking of a warship has failed in front of Kim Jong Un. Apparently shipy staff were arrested who should be responsible for this.
After the breakdown of a warship in North Korea, three employees of the shipyard were arrested, according to state media reports. According to the state news agency KCNA, the leaders were held responsible for the accident.
The 5000-ton destroyer was damaged on Wednesday at the stacking in the port of Chongjin. Satellite images showed the ship lying on the side, partly covered by blue tarpaulins and partly under water.
After the incident, rulers Kim Jong Un had spoken of a “serious accident” and a “criminal act”, which was caused by “absolute carelessness and responsible”. Apparently, parts of the ship’s floor were crushed during the stacking in the ship’s yard in Chongjin in North Korean, as it was said.
“Embarrassment” for Kim Jong un
Experts from the US thinking factory CSIS described the failed stacking run in an analysis as a “embarrassment” for Kim Jong UN and the North Korean Navy. The destroyer will probably not be able to put into service for the foreseeable future.
It is exceptional that North Korea’s state -controlled news agency reports on such a sensitive accident.
The relationships on the Korean peninsula are currently extremely tense. In fact, North and South Korea are still at war, since the Korean War (1950-53) only ended with an armistice. A peace treaty has not yet been signed. Last year Kim described South Korea as a “main enemy” during a fundamental speech.
