The first center is now to open in the Gaza Strip, which is handed over to the food packages. The UN see that critically. And the previous head of the responsible foundation also has doubts about the concept.
According to its own statements, the Gaza Humanitrian Foundation (GHF) Foundation wants to begin the distribution of relief goods with a new mechanism in the Gaza Strip during the day. By the end of the week, more than a million Palestinians are to be reached with the newly organized distribution of relief goods, it said in an explanation. Around 2.2 million people live in the area. The foundation spoke of “direct” aid deliveries.
The Israeli broadcaster Kan, citing Israeli civil servants, also reported that the first distribution center of the GHF would be opened in the Gaza Strip during the day. According to the report, another three centers should be accepted after and after the operation. From these distribution points, food packages are to be issued to the population. The construction of other centers is also planned. According to GHF, 60 percent of the population are to be supplied over the four positions.
The UN see this planned mechanism critically, including because civilians could get into the crossfire on the way to distribution centers and the way there could be an insurmountable hurdle for old and sick people.
Chairman of the GHF steps back
Meanwhile, the chairman of the GHF Foundation, Jake Woods, announced his resignation. According to reports, he does not consider it possible to implement the plan developed under his leadership and at the same time maintain “the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence”. Wood is a US military veteran.
In March, Israel had blocked all aid deliveries in the Gaza Strip and also ended the ceasefire with Hamas. This should increase the pressure on the terrorist organization to relieve the remaining hostages. According to Israel’s government, there was no shortage of relief goods for a long time. The government in Tel Aviv also accuses Hamas of stealing it to make money with it to finance its fighters and weapons, which in turn denies the terrorist organization. The UN say that Israel has not presented any evidence of this. Aid organizations also warn of a famine in the Gaza Strip.
With the new mechanism to distribute the relief goods, Israel wants to prevent Hamas from benefiting from deliveries.
