Friedrich Merz recently traveled to Wolodymyr Selenskyj. According to a media report, this should come to Berlin on Wednesday, for the first time since the Chancellor took office.
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj comes to Berlin, according to a report on Wednesday. As the “Spiegel” writes, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) wants to advise possible steps to further “technical” conversations between Ukraine and Russia at the meeting. The Federal Press Office did not confirm the report.
Selenskyj should also meet Steinmeier
According to “Spiegel”, Merz also wants to inform the Ukrainian President about the plans for a new EU sanction package against Russia, which is intended to increase the pressure on Moscow, to get involved in serious discussions. Selenskyj will also meet Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin.
Merz supports the EU Commission’s proposal to prevent the operation of the North Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in new sanctions against Russia. Shortly after taking office in Kiev, the Chancellor had ultimately asked the French President Emmanuel Macron, the British Prime Minister Keir and the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire. In the event of a refusal, they had threatened with sanctions. However, Russia let the deadline spread.
