Many still know him from Corona pandemic: Virologist Hendrik Streeck, CDU, is given a new task in the controversial field of addiction and drug policy.
The virologist Hendrik Streeck, known from the Corona crisis, is to become the Federal Government’s new drug representative. The 47-year-old CDU MP is to follow the SPD politician Burkhard Blienert in this function, as it was said from government circles. The Bundeskabinett should appreciate the personnel this Wednesday. First “Politico” and the Editorial Network Germany reported about it.
Streeck only moved into the Bundestag at the election on February 23. The professor has been director of the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn since 2019.
Streeck is likely to deal with legalization of cannabis
An important topic of drug policy in this parliamentary term should be the handling of the controversial legalization of cannabis. The Union and SPD agreed in the coalition agreement that an “open -ended evaluation” agreed this autumn. The legalization law already provided for a first evaluation. Since April 1, 2024, it has granted smoking for adults with many restrictions.
