It is the most trickiest journey of the new German Foreign Minister so far. The United States is among the most important partners in Germany. But the relationship is tense.
Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU) advises his US colleague Marco Rubio on a joint procedure on the current international crises this Wednesday.
The meeting in the US capital Washington is intended to deal with German-American relations, the further support of the Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, the transatlantic security and defense policy and the situation in the Middle East, as the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin said.
Rubio, who celebrates his 54th birthday this Wednesday, had invited WadePhul to Washington. It is the official visit to the new German Foreign Minister in the United States. For the first time after taking office, WadePhul and Rubio met Rubio at an informal meeting by NATO Foreign Minister in Antalya in Turkish. The WadePhuls trip is also a preparation for a visit to the USA of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). Merz has announced several times to want to travel to Washington shortly.
Threats with tariffs – also trade policy topic
Against the background of the smoldering conflict about the high tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, the advice of WadePhul and Rubio should also deal with trade relationships between the EU and the USA. A spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin had said that the United States as the closest partner outside the EU was exchanged for all major international challenges and crises where one wanted to come to common solutions.
