Surprise meeting in Berlin – the situation in the morning

Selenskyj is expected in Berlin, a historical judgment is made in Hamm and Merz chats about Trump’s telephone habits. What else is important today.
Good morning, dear readers,
The German Chancellor has not made it particularly easy for Selenskyj: Angela Merkel took the Ukrainian little seriously and preferred to tinker with the pipelineRelationships with the Kremlin. Olaf Scholz was, well, just that Scholzomatwho recently did not want to give the Ukrainian Taurus missiles. With Friedrich Merz, Selenskyj could be easier.
Selenskyjs number one
Merz was still optimistic during his visit on May 10th in Kyiv. But at that time the disaster of the Russia talks and the withdrawal of the Americans from the negotiations was not foreseeable.
When Selenskyj comes to Berlin today, as several media report, the starting point is completely different. His visit to the federal capital is not officially confirmed for security reasons, but it is considered likely. In terms of content, the meeting should be about how to revive the “technical” conversations with Russia. Merz is not very optimistic that you can still tear something at the negotiating table-wars usually came to an end through economic or military exhaustion, one of the two sides or on both sides, he said on Tuesday when he visited Finland. In the case of Ukraine, this could take a long time, the Chancellor predicted.
A meeting with him is certainly not wrong: the German Chancellor has developed into one of the most important contact men Selenskyjs since taking office. On top of that, Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul will meet his US colleague today to work with the USA in dealing with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. Who knows: Maybe the world looks very different again at the end of the day.
Is RWE to blame for climate change?
The Higher Regional Court in Hamm answers this question today. They are still remembering the Peruvian who sued the energy group from Germany. It was already ten years ago – if you consider the damage that has been caused by climate change since then …
But back to Peru: The plaintiff is a farmer and mountain guide. He runs his farm near the Palcacococha glacier lake. He fears that the Andersee could overflow through global warming or a rock crash could be triggered and therefore took expensive protective measures. The man does not find this fair because others contribute significantly more to climate change – for example, energy companies such as RWE, whose power plant parks emit tons of emissions.
Now you have to prove to the company that it is responsible for the damage in Peru. For this purpose, two experts presented an expert opinion. The likelihood of an environmental disaster, as the mountain farmer fears, is therefore one percent. So RWE could get away again. Either way, the court ruling becomes a historical precedent.
France works on sexual crimes
First the Pelicot case, then Gérard Depardieu and now a surgeon: France apparently has a big problem with sexual violence. Some men have apparently deliberately exhausted the boundaries between lascivious advances and sexual assault (depardieu) and apparently interpreted as a free ticket for everything (Pélicot). It is of course good that the cases are gradually being processed gradually. They are a sad testimony of reality.
Today we expect the next judgment: it is about a 74-year-old surgeon who is said to have abused almost 300 children. He probably did not differ between the sexes. He recorded his shameful acts in diaries in writing. The man had already been sentenced to 15 years in prison for other abuse cases. Now another 20 could come.
How best to call Trump on the phone
… our Chancellor Friedrich Merz apparently knows. He has had the pleasure several times since taking office in early May. “You have to adjust to him and get involved in him,” he said at the Digital Conference Republica in Berlin. Merz also indirectly addressed the vanities of the US president. You have to let him talk on the phone – even at the risk that the conversation will only turn around Trump himself. The vain man from the White House apparently has to express his soft spot in itself. You can find out why serious political conversations with him are still possible here:
What still happens today
- The coalition committee of the Union and SPD meets. It is discussed about which decisions the new GroKo should make before the summer break. You can read the plans here.
- Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul travels to the USA to visit the USA. The trip should also be prepared for a trip to the USA of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In terms of content, WadePhul’s agenda looks like this: future support for Ukraine and possible negotiations on ceasefire, defense financing and NATO contributions, Israel and the situation in the Gaza Strip as well as the announcement of high trade tariffs against the EU by US President Donald Trump.
- A Man should in July 2021 in a city park in Hanover up to eight times ahave stabbed a homeless personthat was sitting on a bench. The victim blew, the alleged perpetrator is on trial. Today the judgment could be.
- For the first time, Namibia holds a genocide commemorative day. It is about the victims of the German genocide to the Herero and Nama. The colonial power had blocked people of these groups in a concentration camp that was dissolved in 1907 after international criticism. Incidentally, May 28th is now a national holiday in Namibia.
I wish you a pleasant Wednesday. Hopefully you can enjoy a day off tomorrow. We read again on Friday. Until then!
