How likely is China’s attack on Taiwan? The US defense minister considers the danger high. His counterpart from Beijing does not even travel to the conference in Singapore.
US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth warned of a rapidly growing threat from China in the Indopazacifik area. The USA observed the “destabilizing actions” Beijing very well, he emphasized in a speech at a security conference in Singapore – and spoke of “catastrophic consequences” in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
China is part of the island republic of its territory, although the country has had a government independent by Beijing for decades. The People’s Republic wants to incorporate Taiwan and threatened to use the military, should this not work peacefully.
Is invasion imminent?
Hegseth gave his speech on the second day of the three-day security conference Shangri-la dialogue in the Southeast Asian economic metropolis. Unlike last year, the Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun. Beijing, according to observers, deliberately did not meet a possible meeting with Hegseth.
“China’s army practices an emergency,” said the Pentagon boss. “We will not gloss over anything – the threat from China is real. And it could be imminent.” It must be clear to everyone that Beijing specifically prepares the use of military violence in order to change the balance of power in the Indopazacifik. “We know that (the Chinese president) XI Jinping has instructed his military to be ready for an invasion of Taiwan until 2027.”
“Don’t let us displace from the region”
China strives to become the hegemonic power in Asia and to dominate and control the entire region, said Hegseth. His country does not strive for a conflict “with the communist china”. “But we will not be displaced from this critical region. And we will not allow our allies and partners to be subordinate,” he said.
At the meeting in Singapore, hundreds of ministers, military and experts from all over the world discuss the current foci of crisis and threats. At the opening on Friday evening, France’s head of state Emmanuel Macron had warned of a global split by the great powers USA and China. At the same time, he called for closer cooperation between Europe and Asia and spoke out for a “coalition of independence” with universal values.
