Turkey: “Ox in the palace”: Turkish journalist faces long imprisonment

Sedef Kabas faces a sentence of up to twelve years and ten months in prison. The Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office accepted an indictment against the well-known TV journalist. The reason: Presidential insult.

A Turkish journalist faces years in prison for publicly citing a saying about an ox in a palace.

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office accepted an indictment against Sedef Kabas. Among other things, she is accused of insulting the president and officials, as reported by the state news agency Anadolu. She faces a sentence of up to twelve years and ten months in prison.

In a Turkish television program, Kabas criticized the government for cracking down on critics and for polarizing society. There and later on Twitter, she quoted a proverb: “When an ox goes into a palace, it does not become a king, but the palace becomes a stable.” She did not explicitly mention Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or his presidential palace in Ankara.

According to the indictment, the allegation of insulting officials relates to statements made by Kabas about Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and Transport Minister Adil Karaismailoglu.
