State head: Exciting presidential election in Poland – tremors for every voice

A head-to-head race still emerges in the runoff election around the presidential office in Poland. According to current forecasts, the right -wing conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki received 50.7 percent of the votes, and 49.3 percent of the votes were therefore in the liberal candidates Rafal Trzaskowski. The turnout was therefore 71.7 percent.

The forecasts are based on the basis of post -selection surveys in 500 polling stations and partial counts in 250 of these polling stations. According to the IPSOS opinion research institute, these detailed forecasts have an error tolerance of one percentage point. There are no minor bills like in Germany in Poland. According to the election commission, the official end result will be available on Monday morning.

The first forecasts immediately after the polling stations were closed had seen Trzaskowski in the lead with a slight lead. Both politicians showed themselves to be sure of victory in front of their followers on the election evening. Trzaskowski spoke of success immediately after the announcement of the first forecasts. “We won, even if I think the expression” on the razor blade “will find its way into the Polish language,” said the 53-year-old under the cheers of his followers. At the Nawrocki election party, the mood was initially significantly more subdued. He appealed to his supporters not to lose hope. “We have to win that night and we know that this will happen.”

The approximately 29 million voters were called to choose a successor to President Andrzej Duda. He was not allowed to compete again after two term.

The vote is considered a choice of direction for the EU and NATO country Poland. The non -party Nawrocki is the candidate of the right -wing conservative PIS, Poland’s largest opposition party. The PIS ruled the country from 2015 to 2023. It put the judiciary to the scandaral of politics and was in the long -term clinch with Brussels because of this intervention.

Donald Tusk’s Mitte-left-left alliance, which has been ruling since December 2023, tried to reject a lot of it with reform projects. But the previous President Duda, who comes from the ranks of the PIS, had slowed her down with his veto. Tusk does not have the necessary majority of 60 percent in parliament to abolish the president’s vetos.

President with a lot of power

The Polish head of government therefore hopes for an election victory of his political colleague Trzaskowski. The 53-year-old Warsaw Mayor is considered progressive and left within his political camp. As head of state, he would support Tusk’s course.

In Poland, the President serves five years. The head of state has more powers than the Federal President in Germany. It not only represents the country to the outside world. The President also has an impact on foreign policy, he appoints the head of government and the cabinet and is a high -commander of the Polish armed forces in the event of war. Above all, however, he can make life difficult for the government with his veto law.
