Austria’s former finance minister Karl-Heinz Grasser was bribed. Now the once popular politician in the corruption procedure was spoken guilty.
The former Austrian finance minister Karl-Heinz Grasser started a four-year prison sentence in a bribery. According to the Innsbruck judge, the APA news agency reported, where the former FPÖ politician is now in custody.
The once popular politician was finance minister from 2000 to 2007. In March, the Supreme Court confirmed in an appeal that he was guilty of infidelity and gift acceptance as a minister in the course of selling state real estate. A total of 9.6 million euros in bribes flowed from the successful bidder via tax havens to Grasser and other convicted accused.
Grasser could benefit from the possible change in the law in Austria
According to Austrian law, Grasser could be released prematurely after two years – the second year he could serve in the house arrest with ankle. However, the government is currently planning a change in the law according to which Grasser could leave prison earlier. The 56-year-old Grasser had once again asserted his innocence after completion of the court proceedings and spoke of a misjudgment.
