What’s next in the neighboring country? The liberal candidate of the government camp lost in the presidential election. This is a heavy setback for Prime Minister Tusk.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk puts the defeat of his political ally Rafal Trzaskowski in the presidential election in Poland. Tusk announced on Monday evening on Polish television. On the grounds, he says that the plan for acting his government under the new President Karol Nawrocki will require “unity and courage” of the triple coalition. The vote of trust should be a first test for this.
Commentators in Warsaw warn that the conflict between the government and the head of state Poland could plunge into political chaos.
In the runoff election around the Polish Presidential Office on Sunday, Nawrocki, supported by the right -wing conservative PIS, won with a narrow head start against Trzaskowski. This is also a heavy slump for the head of government. PIS boss Jaroslaw Kaczynski said the result of the presidential election was the “red card” for Tusk’s government. This should cede.
Tusk has been running a center-left alliance of three parties since the end of 2023. It is the most important project in his government to reverse the damage to the rule of law, which triggered the PIS government, which was in office from 2015 to 2023, with its judicial reform. The incumbent President Andrzej Duda, who comes from the ranks of the PIS, has so far blocked corresponding draft. Nawrocki is expected to do so and possibly even proceed with larger hardness. “If Duda put a stick of the government in the spokes, then it will be two at Nawrocki”, ex-President Aleksander Kwasniewski predicts in an interview with the TV station Polsat.
Tusk: If you won’t give back a step
“In accordance with the constitution and our conscience, we will work with the new president wherever this is necessary and possible,” said Tusk. At the same time, he emphasized: “Everyone will see that the government is not planning to soak only one step.”
In Poland, the head of state has more powers than the Federal President in Germany. It not only represents the country to the outside world. The President also has an impact on foreign policy, he appoints the head of government and the cabinet and is a high -commander of the Polish armed forces in the event of war. Above all, he can make life difficult with his veto law of the government. In order to abolish the President’s veto, a majority of 60 percent of MPs are required in Parliament, which Tusk’s center-left alliance does not have.
Nawrocki is against NATO accession of Ukraine
The 42-year-old historian Nawrocki is independent and politically completely inexperienced. He owes his climb to Pis boss Kaczynski. He will probably take over his goal of bringing the government of Tusk to fall.
This could also have consequences in terms of foreign policy. For example, Nawrocki spoke out against NATO against the accession of the Ukraine attacked by Russia – this is a position of the Kremlin.
From the Leyen: Poland will continue to be Ukraine
EU Commission chief Ursula der Leyen emphasized in an interview with ZDF, however, that she is firmly convinced that Poland was still on the side of Ukraine even after the presidential election. The Poles are absolutely united in the defense against Russian striving for power.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) congratulated Nawrocki on the election victory on Monday evening. In view of deep geopolitical changes, Germany and Poland face major challenges, wrote Merz. “We want to successfully master these with our Polish neighbors.” You don’t forget “the difficult suffering that Germans have brought over Poland”.
