Russia criticizes NATO maneuvers in the Baltic Sea as a provocation

NATO maneuvers are traditionally criticized by Moscow near Russia. Now the Vice Foreign Minister expresses sharply for exercise in the Baltic Sea, where the Russians themselves play through combat scenarios.

A day before the beginning of the two-week NATO Marinemanöver Baltop in the Baltic Sea, Russia criticized the exercise as a provocation. Moscow Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Gruschko accused the western military alliance of preparing for a confrontation with Russia. “It is about obtaining superiority in all areas: on land, to water, in the air. Of course, such exercises are extremely provocative,” said Gruschko of the state news agency TASS. Russia, even in the Baltic Sea, is pulling a maneuver with more than 20 warships, cannon boats and support ships.

Gruschko also says: “We assess NATO’s military activities as part of the preparation for military clashes with Russia.” The entire conception of the maneuver and the structure of the troop constellation showed that the NATO forces had Russia in mind as an enemy.

The annually oriented Baltops maneuver begins this Thursday for the 54th time-and for the first time in Rostock. From June 5th to June 20th, around 50 ships and boats, more than 25 aircraft and around 9,000 soldiers from 17 countries take part in the US-led exercise. The Baltic Sea is also considered a strategically important sea in view of the ongoing Russian attack war on Ukraine. Russia is the only of the nine of the Baltic Sea states not a NATO member.

Russia itself also pulls through maneuvers in the Baltic Sea

Russia itself informed itself on May 27 about the beginning of a maneuver of his Baltic fleet in the Baltic Sea. “It is emphasized that the exercises are carried out to test the actions of the fleet forces to defend the bases,” said the Navy. According to Russian state television, the maneuver was still running this week.

Corvettes, frigates, small rocket ships, small submarines and minuchy boats are therefore involved. According to Russian information, around 3,000 soldiers, around 25 aircraft and helicopters as well as up to 70 units of military and special equipment should also take part in the exercises. Russia had expanded its naval presence in the Baltic Sea in view of the NATO activities.
