Strictly religious men had been released from conscription in Israel for decades. This exception expired last year. The government did not succeed in a new regulation – is she breaking it?
The Israeli government coalition falter in the dispute over the compulsory military service for strictly religious men. After a failed compromise search, leading rabbis of the United Tora Judaism had announced an exit from the right-religious government alliance of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It was initially unclear whether there could still be an agreement at the last minute. Several opposition parties want to take a advance to dissolve the parliament next week.
The government currently has a majority of 68 out of 120 seats in parliament. The party united Tora Judaism has seven seats. Netanyahu’s government would only lose its majority if the party leaked, the second strictly religious party in the government, Schas, also followed the step. It has eleven mandates.
According to opinion surveys, Netanyahu’s political opponents could win the majority in the event of a new election. The next election will only take place regularly in October next year.
Strictly religious Jews see military service as a threat
Strictly religious men had been released from conscription in Israel for decades. However, this exemption ran out last year. The Israeli government failed to adopt a new law to cement this special status for the ultra -orthodox. The Supreme Court finally issued a judgment in the summer of 2024 that ultra -orthodox men are to be collected for military service.
Many ultra -orthodox Jews perceive the military service as a threat to their pious lifestyle, including because women and men serve together.
In view of the long war against the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the army had urged a drastic lack of fighting soldiers. In addition, many Israelis find it unfair that ultra -orthodox Jews are excluded from service on the weapon and dangerous combat inserts.
