It is his most difficult trip to date: The meeting of Chancellor Merz with US President Trump in Washington will set the tone for German-American relations in the coming years.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) broke up to Washington, where he will meet US President Donald Trump for the first time since he took office four weeks ago. A lunch together and a press affair in the Oval Office (approx. 6.45 p.m. CEST), the president’s office, are planned. There, the visits to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had caught.
The focus of the meeting will focus on the end of the Ukraine War, the reaction of NATO to the growing threats from outside and the customs dispute between the USA and the EU. Merz has already made it clear that he is not traveling to Washington as a “supplicant” and that the European positions are confidently represented there.
The Chancellor met Trump fleetingly in New York many years ago. Since taking office four weeks ago, however, he has spoken to him several times- in pairs and in a larger group with several other European state and government heads for the Ukraine War. The two now speak to their first names and are regularly in contact with SMS.
The Chancellor will only be in the US capital for about 17 hours. In June, Merz and Trump will see each other twice again: at the G7 summit in Canada in mid-June and at the NATO summit at the end of the month in the Dutch Den Haag.
