The customs threats of US President Trump against the EU will be a main topic when Chancellor Merz’s inaugural visit will be in the White House. The CDU general secretary thinks one step further.

Despite the current trade dispute between the EU and the USA, CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann has not given up hope for a free trade agreement between the two sides. It is almost 800 million people in democratic states who should have an interest in “that we prevail with common standards in the world, also to China,” Linnemann told the German Press Agency between Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and US President Donald Trump in Washington. “Cooperation is the key.”

The EU and the United States had demolished negotiations on a 2016 free trade agreement. Since Trump took office, the signs have been confronted. The US President relies on fighting the European trade surplus with tariffs.

Despite the burdened relationships between Germany and the USA, Linnemann hopes that there will be a “respectful meeting” between Merz and Trump in the White House. “Friedrich Merz has a high affinity for America. He was there more than 170 times and ten years chairman of the Atlantic Bridge,” said Linnemann of the German Press Agency. “I think these are the best prerequisites for talking to Donald Trump.”
