What role will dealing with the AfD play at the meeting in the White House? This question was raised before Merz ‘inaugural visit to Trump. The Chancellor now gives an answer.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) said that he did not talk about dealing with the AfD at his meeting with US President Donald Trump in the capital Washington. When asked whether the topic came up, Merz replied in an interview by the broadcaster CNN: “Interestingly, not with a word.” He concludes that in the United States one is now a little clearer about “what kind of party this so -called alternative for Germany is really”.
Germany is a very strong and steadfast democracy, said Merz. “We are grown up, and frankly, we do not need any lessons from outside, how we rule our country and how we do democracy in Germany, we do it ourselves,” he affirmed his point of view.
The Trump government has accused Germany and other European allies in recent months a restriction of freedom of expression and an exclusion of parties such as the AfD. US Vice President JD Vance, for example, attacked the European partners unusually sharply at the Munich Security Conference in February and warned them of a threat to democracy. He indirectly referred to the German debate about a delimitation from the AfD and warned of “fire walls” in Europe.
