US court blocks entry stop for foreign Harvard students

Almost all foreign Harvard students should be denied entry-so Donald Trump wants it. The university defends itself legally. And gets right for now.

A federal court in the United States blocked the entry stop announced by President Donald Trump for almost all foreign nationals who want to study at the Harvard elite university for the time being. Until a hearing in court, the rules that have been valid so far should be maintained, the reasoning of judge Allison D. Burroughs said.

The university, which is based in Cambridge in the state of Massachusetts, has sufficiently demonstrated that otherwise they would “suffer an immediate and non -resolving damage”, Burroughs argued. The stop of the project applies to the announcement and was in force until a further order from the court.

Harvard can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being – but also in the long run?

In this way, the university can first breathe a sigh of relief in the dispute with the US government, even if the final outcome of the procedure is not yet foreseeable. The university management had recently appealed against Trump’s announcement by expanding an existing lawsuit before the court.

The government accuses several universities such as Harvard a left -liberal orientation and, among other things, claims that there were no sufficient measures against anti -Semitism. Unlike other universities, Harvard opposes far -reaching political guidelines from Washington and legally takes action against it.

Judge decided in the benefit of Harvard in May

Trump had announced on Wednesday (local time) that the planned entry limitation should initially apply for six months. Harvard rejected his argument that the entry of foreign nationals who want to study at the university was “harmful to the interests of the United States”. According to Trump’s announcement, the same people are still likely to enter as long as they do not want to study in Harvard. Trump’s announcement therefore only aims to enforce his well -known project that will already be contested legally, the revised application said.

The university has been defending itself against the exclusion of foreign students planned by the US government since last month. Judge Burroughs had already stopped this project in May – and now also extended this decision. He initially prevents the government from banning the university to continue to include students from abroad through a special federal program.
