Pleasant if the income increases all by itself: the diets for the MPs of the German Bundestag increase to almost 12,000 euros on July 1st. The parliament voted on Thursday evening to continue the automatic annual adjustment of the MP. The Union, SPD and Greens voted for the draft brought in by the government factions. Left and AfD rejected him.
The compensation for MPs has been 11,227.20 euros per month since July 1 of last year. According to the law, the diets increase automatically annually, but the Bundestag now had to work and confirm this adjustment mechanism for the new legislative period. Specifically, this means that the MPs get more than 606 euros per month from July.
MPs in the Bundestag get more money after an automatism
The diets have been linked to general merit development for employees in Germany since 2016. The basis for this is the nominal wage index that the Federal Statistical Office is determined. According to this, the nominal wages rose by 5.4 percent last year compared to 2023. The diets of the members of the Bundestag are now also increasing by this sentence and will be 11,833 euros per month from July.
The left has clearly criticized the increase and automatism. Party leader Ines Schwerdtner told the portal “Web.de News” that the procedure was “absurd and indecent”. The clear automatic increase is a slap in the face of those “who have to work for twelve euros an hour”.
The AfD is also against the automatic adjustment of the diets. The parliamentary managing director of the AfD parliamentary group, Stephan Brandner, told the portal that it could not be “that people have to fight their wage increases in normal employment relationships, while MPs simply get their increase”.
