The deportation of eight criminals from the USA was stopped during the flight. The migrants and officials are now waiting for further instructions on a military basis.
Depending officers and deported people usually have little in common. But on a remote military base in East Africa, some of them can currently be found in a kind of fate community.
More than two weeks ago, eight migrants from the USA were to be deported to the South Sudan, accompanied by a group of agents of the ICE authority who is responsible for deportation. It is said to be offenders who have been condemned for murder, sexual offenses or other serious crimes.

But while the officials and migrants were in the air, a district judge stopped deportation. The men would first have to get an appropriate way to contest their deportation. The group on the plane towards South Sudan initially flew a US naval base in Dschibuti-and has been stuck there since then as long as there is no final decision.
Melissa Harper, a high-ranking ICE representative, described the situation from the authority’s point of view at a judicial hearing. Accordingly, the military base was not prepared for the arrival of the three officials and eight migrants. This apparently led to hardly any durable living conditions. According to Harper, there is a lack of medical care and accommodation.
The arrivals had no anti-malaria medication with them, reported the police and customs authorities officers. Both the officials and the prisoners had become sick within 72 hours. It is unclear how long the available medication on the military base would be enough.
According to the authority, the risk of rocket attacks by terrorists from Yemen is added to the malaria risk. The US military fights the Huthi militia in the country. The Huthi, in turn, have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea. In the event of an attack, the ICE officials did not have the necessary protective equipment, warned Melissa Harper.
Criminals are guarded around the clock
On the military base, there are no possibilities to accommodate the offenders appropriately and safely. Currently, men would be captured in a freight container that was converted into a conference room. The eleven ICE officials on the base are busy guarding them in twelve-hour layers around the clock. “You are unable to maintain constant surveillance and support,” said Harper.
From the authority and the Ministry of Homeland, sharp criticism of the judge from Massachusetts, who has stopped deportation. “He puts the lives of our civil servants in danger. They are stranded in Dschibuti without adequate resources, with poor medical care and with terrorists who hate freelance Americans,” said a spokeswoman for the ministry.
The migrants’ lawyers also commented on the military base. The Trump government urges the Supreme Court to suspend the district judge’s order. Until a decision, the prisoners could also be flown back to the United States-but apparently the US government does not want that either.
