The Bundeswehr should grow – but voluntarily. SPD parliamentary group leader Miersch considers 60,000 additional soldiers to be realistic. He currently excludes a possible return to compulsory military service.
According to SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch, there will be no negotiations on a possible return to compulsory compulsory in this legislative period. “The coalition agreement clearly states that we rely on voluntariness,” said Miersch of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). “You may then negotiate conscription in the upcoming legislative period, not in this.”
Miersch considers the target of 60,000 additional soldiers to be reached in the medium term. “Currently, there would be no sufficient training capacities.” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had stated that up to 60,000 soldiers were also necessary for the new NATO planning goals for increased defense ability in the active group.
Military officer warns of overwhelming the troops
The new military officer of the Bundestag, Henning Otte (CDU), said in the ARD “daily topics” that the troop had to be protected from excessive demands. Maybe there must even be a mandatory military service again. “As a military officer, I will lie down on the resolution, and this year.”
The Bundeswehrverband boss André Wüstner had also advised the black and red coalition to set the course for a possible reintroduction of compulsory military service. In order to achieve the increased NATO goals, the voluntary service must also become more attractive, said Wüstner. He announced doubts that on the basis of voluntariness, he would only be able to win up to 60,000 additional men and women for the active team.
Make service with the Bundeswehr more attractive
Miersch said the key question: “How do we ensure that the service becomes attractive?” He explained: “That was not possible because of the lack of equipment. Boris Pistorius can now invest and address young people differently.” One will now wait and see how the concept of the Minister of Defense for voluntary increase in the troops.
