Minister Warken: need a lot more organ donation
Many people are waiting for a life -saving donor organ. The responsible minister makes an appeal to people.
Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken has called on people to make themselves available as potential organ donors. “Organic donation saves life. There are many people who are urgently dependent on an organ transplant. We therefore need significantly more organ donation than before,” wrote the CDU politician on platform X on the day of organ donation. The minister appealed to everyone who is in principle ready for this step: “Talk to relatives about it, document your decision – whether in an organ donation card or in the organ donation register.”
In the register launched a year ago, around 319,200 people have now stated explanations of their general willingness to donate. 82.9 percent of organ withdrawals after death fully approved, as the Federal Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices announced as an operator on request. 8.1 percent documented a contradiction.
Long waiting lists for donor organs
The portal www.organspende-abister.de has been online since March 2024. From the age of 16 you can document whether you are willing to donate after death or not. The information is voluntary and can be changed and deleted at any time. Organ donation ID cards and other explanations on paper are still possible. The register is the core of a law of 2020 that aims at more information and easier documenting decisions. Accordingly, one should also be able to register in the register on offices.
Organs such as kidneys, liver or hearts for seriously ill patients are urgently needed. Last year, 953 people released organs for others, after 965 in 2023. At the same time, almost 8,300 people were on waiting lists at the end of 2024.
The board of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, Eugen Brysch, complained that the central online register for donation willingness to donate his goal miles. “People are made much too complicated,” he said. Therefore – as decided by the Bundestag in 2020 – passing and ID points would also have to be connected to the register.
