Against the will of the governor of California, Trump uses 2,000 soldiers of the National Guard there. The triggers are protests against deportations by federal security forces.
In response to massive protests against the security forces of the US immigration authority ICE in the Los Angeles area, President Donald Trump ordered the use of 2,000 soldiers of the National Guard. The soldiers should put an end to “lawlessness” there, explained the spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt. As commander -in -chief, Trump will ensure that the United States’ laws would be enforced.
In the United States, states normally have control over the national guard. A use of the Guard on the command of the President marks a massive escalation. The Democratic Governor of the State of California, Gavin Newsom, vehemently protested Trump’s procedure.
The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces. Each state has its own national guard, which can be used in forest fires, hurricanes, floods or unrest inside. It is then under the command of the respective governor. If there is a war or national emergencies, the US President can take command. In total, the United States has more than 325,000 national guards.
Trump disparages California governor
Immediately before the Weißen House’s explanation, Trump had already threatened to intervene in the federal government. If Governor Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass did not make her jobs properly, the government will intervene and solve the problem with “unrest and looting”, the President wrote on his Truth social platform. Instead of using the governor’s correct surname, Trump described him in his post as “Newscum” – a pun with the English term “scum”, which means “scum” in German.
Newsom, in turn, explained on platform X, the authorities in the district and in the city of Los Angeles there were no need for a use of the National Guard and could access reinforcements at any time. With this step, the government deliberately heats up the situation, which will only lead to further escalation. “This is the wrong task and will shake the public’s trust,” said Newsom.
Protests since Friday – use of tear gas
In the Los Angeles area there had been protests against operations by the ICE security forces since Friday. They wanted to arrest migrants – apparently to implement the goal of the president, to deport more people. The white house spoke of “normal deportation inserts”. The security forces countered the demonstrators in full gear with signs and helmets, and tear gas was also used.
Mayor Bass and the local police distanced themselves from the ICE missions and, as usual, do not want to work with the Federal Authority in their area of responsibility to enable deportations. This is how many cities controlled by Democrats behave in the United States – whereas the Republicans want to implement the mass deportations announced by Trump.
118 migrants arrested
According to the U.S. Ministry of Department, around 1,000 demonstrators attacked ICE officials on Friday. The ministry criticized the local police only after two hours. During the week, 118 foreigners without a valid residence permit were arrested in Los Angeles, including gang members and criminal records.
Justice Minister Pam Bondi warned on X. Anyone who disabled or attack security forces must expect law enforcement. FBI director Kash Patel also threatened to use his agents.
