The dog is considered the best friend of man – but not in Iran. There, the authorities have now expanded a ban on a walk to around 20 cities.
The authorities in Iran have banned walking with dogs in several cities. According to media reports from Sunday, a ban that has been in effect in the capital Tehran for several years has been extended to around 20 other cities. The possession of dogs has been a very controversial topic in Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 – but it is not officially banned.
According to the Islamic tradition, dogs are considered to be impure and their possessions are not very common in Iran. Religious-conservatives argue that playing or walking with dogs in public “the Islamic culture as well as hygiene and the peace of others damage damage. They are also signs of the western way of lifestyle.
Iran: Walking with a dog has been banned in Tehran since 2019
In Tehran, a police arrangement had already been issued in 2019, which forbids walking with dogs. According to this media reports, these media reports have now been extended to at least 18 other cities in the past few days. These measures aimed to “maintain public order, to ensure security and to protect public health,” said the state newspaper “Iran”.
In their campaign against dog owners, regional authorities in Iran have repeatedly issued bans for taking dogs in public space or in vehicles. However, the enforcement of these restrictions was rarely consistent: many dog owners, for example, in Tehran, continue to be walks openly with their favorites.
