IAEA boss: “Big concern” for Iran’s uranium enrichment

Iran produces uranium, which could be processed into nuclear weapons material with little effort. Unexplained questions about nuclear projects provide additional conflict.

The top UN atom guard, Rafael Grossi, is increasingly worried about the Iranian nuclear program. The rapid increase in the quantities of almost nuclear weapons -compatible uranium in Iran gives rise to “great concern,” Grossi said before the governor councilor of the IAEA in Vienna.

Iran is the only country without nuclear weapons that producing such material, he then emphasized in a press conference. On Monday, Grossi also asked Tehran to finally answer questions about unexplained nuclear projects. “I urgently ask Iran to work completely and sustainably with the international nuclear energy authority,” he said.

Germany and other states are planning Iran resolution

Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States want to emphasize this request this week: In a resolution in the Governor Council, they want to state that Iran violates its legal obligations to the IAEA. If Tehran still does not cooperate, the UN Security Council could be involved in the summer, it was said from diplomatic circles.

In view of the rising western pressure, Iranian representatives have threatened with consequences and once again assured that their country is not planning to build nuclear weapons. It was initially unclear whether the resolution will have a negative impact on the US Iranian nuclear discussions that have been running since April or on the cooperation between IAEA and Iran.

No harmfulness of the IAEA

From the perspective of the international atomic energy authority, Iran has operated a program for the development of nuclear weapons components up to the early 2000s. Even after that, there were sub -projects “that could be relevant in this regard,” said Grossi in front of journalists. The IAEA does not claim that a nuclear weapon program is still running, he said. Nevertheless, his authority could not guarantee that all nuclear activities in the country currently served only peaceful purposes.
