Did Jair Bolsonaro and helper want to overthrow the government in Brazil? The ex-president has to answer in court. A former confidante heavily burdened him as a key witness.
In the trial of a suspected coup attempt, the Supreme Court of Brazil (STF) began the interrogation of eight defendants around ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. The Attorney General accuses them of having planned a coup of state against the government of his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after Bolsonaros voting. Shortly after Lula’s taking office, followers of Bolsonaro stormed the congress, the Supreme Court and the President Palace on January 8, 2023. It was only hours later that security forces brought the government district back under control in the capital Brasília.
According to the Attorney General, the defendants around Bolsonaro are said to have played a central role in attempted coupons against the democratic order. The interrogations start with lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid, adjutant and familiar Bolsonaros during its presidency. CID is now cooperating as a key witness with the judiciary, his statements are heavily burdened by the right ex-president. In addition to Bolsonaro, the other accused are several former ministers and high military. Bolsonaro itself should also be heard in the process when exactly is still unclear.
Among other things, the accused are accused of the attempted abolition of the democratic legal system, an attempted coup d’état, participation in an armed criminal association, property damage and the damage listed goods. The hearings are scheduled until June 13th.
