Court confirms judgment: six years in prison for former head of state Kirchner








Argentina’s ex-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner must now serve her prison sentence, to which she was sentenced to in 2022. But she doesn’t have to go to prison.

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has been sentenced to six years in prison. The Supreme Court in Buenos Aires rejected the appeals of the former head of state (2007 – 2015) and confirmed the first instance judgment of 2022, as local media reported.

In addition, the 72-year-old was forbidden to exercise public offices for life. Kirchner had announced her candidacy for a MP mandate in the province of Buenos Aires just a few weeks ago. Due to her age, she can serve the punishment in the house arrest.

Kirchner and her now died husband, ex -President Néstor Kirchner (2003 – 2007), are said to have agreed to have public orders as head of state as heads of state as head of state without tender. According to the indictment, some of the excessive construction costs were later flowed back to the couple. The Kirchners are said to have brought the state by around one billion US dollars.

Cristina Kirchner has shaped the political landscape in Argentina for decades. She was first lady, senator, president and vice president of the South American country. The charismatic politician dominates the street through social movements, unions and party groups such as the faithful youth organization La Cámpora.

However, hardly any other politician polarizes as much as Kirchner: as intimately as she is loved by her followers, she is hated as passionately by her opponents. The political landscape of Argentina is heavily polarized, the “Grieta (Riss) between right and left runs through the whole society.
