Donald Trump has long been the renaming of several military bases. Now he wants to undo the step – and uses a trick.
US President Donald Trump wants to return their previous names several military base-names that originally honored Southern Generals. However, the Pentagon officially names other namesake, not the generals themselves, but earned soldiers with the same last names as the southern generals. With this trick, the military bases get their old names back – critics should be removed from the sails at the same time.
Trump announced in a speech at the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina, the names Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort AP Hill and also Fort Robert E. Lee were restored. Fort Bragg himself was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 – as part of a larger process that was supposed to end the honor of generals in the southern army.
The base was previously named after General Braxton Bragg, an officer of the Confederation Army who fought in the civil war (1861–1865) on the side of the southern states. Trump reversed the renaming to Fort Liberty after taking office – a campaign promise.

The other bases listed by Trump had also been renamed in recent years because they were originally named after Confödered-Generälen, which fought against the Union and for the preservation of slavery during the civil war. These names are now considered a symbol of racism and oppression. The renaming was considered to be the processing of American history. Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden had supported the renaming.
Similar to Fort Bragg, the military base points should no longer officially honor Südstaten Generals when naming. It is striking, however, that Trump explicitly spoke of Robert E. Lee at Fort Lee, who led the confederates against the north states in the civil war. Lee is transfigured as a hero by the right -wing scene in the USA. According to the Pentagon, Fort Lee is to be officially named after Fitz Lee, an African-American soldier who fought in the Spanish-American War.
