Another sad certainty: According to Israeli information, the corpses were recovered by two other people deported by Hamas.
According to its own statements, the Israeli army has recovered the corpses of two hostages in the Gaza Strip. Members of the armed forces and the domestic secret service Schin Bet would have found the remains of Yair Yaakov and another person who was deported by the Islamists in a “joint effort” in the Chan Junis region in the south of the Palestinian area, the army said on Wednesday. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the rescue of the two corpses.
Identity of second Israeli hostage is still unknown
The militant Palestinian organization of Islamic Jihad allied with the Hamas had kidnapped 59-year-old Yaakov and his partner Meirav valley with over 1200 deaths from the Kibbutz Nir OZ in her major attack on Israel. According to the army, Yaakov was “brutally murdered” on the same day, valley released in November 2023 during the first ceasefire in the Gaza War.
The couple had fled into the shelter of his house in Kibbutz Nir Oz. The day after the attack, the relatives of the two came across a video on which it was seen how the attackers violently blow up the door of the shelter with grenades.
The army initially made no information about the identity of the second recovered body. For the publication of the name, “no release has yet been made”. Yaakov’s sons Yagil and Or Yaakov are German citizens, according to the Federal Foreign Office. In the Hamas robbery on Israel on October 7, 2023, they were also deported by the Islamists into the Gaza strips and were released in November 2023.
54 hostages still in the Gaza Strip – probably 32 dead
The German ambassador in Israel, Steffen Seibert, wrote on Wednesday that he was “deeply moved” that the Israeli army of Yaakov had brought back from the Gaza Strip, and think of Yaakov’s sons or and Yagil. The Federal Foreign Office wrote that Yair Yaakov was “murdered by Hamas” and added to the sons of the murdered: “Our thoughts are with them.”
Netanyahu said that his government would “not rest and not be silent until all of our hostages – the living like the dead – are brought home”.
The Hamas and allied Islamist groups with it had dragged a total of 251 people into the Gaza Strip on October 7th. According to the latest information, 54 hostages were still there before the announcement of the corporations that have now been recovered, at least 32 of them should already be dead.
