Red and green are already working closely together in the opposition. Now join a party.
Social Democrats and Greens in the Netherlands are merging into a new party. According to the party leaders, the members of both parties agree with a corresponding fusion proposal with a large majority. At the Green Party Groenlinks, 89 percent said yes to the foundation of the new party, at the Social Democratic Party for the work PVDA it was 88 percent.
For procedural reasons, the merger will only be completed in the coming year and is therefore too late for the early parliamentary election on October 29.
Both parties are already working closely together in a red -green alliance of the opposition. In the election in October, they also want to compete with a common list, as well as in the previous election 2023.
Under the leadership of the Social Democrat Fran Timmermans, the red -green alliance with 25 mandates became the second strongest force – behind the radical rights populist Geert Wilders and his PVV. It is expected that the alliance will again be the top candidate in the election with the former EU Commissioner Timmermans.
The right four-party coalition was broken in the dispute over asylum policy last week. Wilders had left the coalition.
