Ukrainian refugees should continue to be able to live in the EU without asylum application. There is also talk about return options.
The EU member states have achieved a political principle of extending the temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine by another year – until March 2027. Thus, those affected continued to have access to the labor market, social benefits and medical care without having to go through asylum procedure, it said in a message on the sidelines of a meeting of the EU Interior Minister in Luxembourg.
Political unification is an important step. The formal farewell by the Member States is still pending and, according to a spokesman, is expected in one of the upcoming meetings.
Return to Ukraine?
At the same time, the EU countries advise on a recommendation from the Commission to prepare a coordinated return strategy. This is intended to facilitate the refugee to transition to other forms of residence, such as work or student visa. In addition, the information about return options is to be improved and the way for a gradual return to Ukraine is to be paved.
EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner announced the appointment of a special envoy for Ukrainian refugees. If the situation in Ukraine stabilizes, the protection status could also be canceled prematurely according to Brunner.
According to the Commission, over 4.3 million people have fled from Ukraine to the EU since the beginning of the Russian attack war. Germany has taken up most refugees with over 1.2 million.
