There is a debate in the black and red federal government about the reintroduction of military service. Jens Spahn now spoke out for a quick return.
According to a media report, Union faction leader Jens Spahn calls for a structure in the Bundeswehr that enables a return to compulsory military service. “In any case, a structure in the Bundeswehr must be created that makes a rapid return to compulsory conscription. This does not go overnight, but we have to start preparations,” said Spahn of the “Rheinische Post” according to a preliminary report.
The Federal Republic must again become defensive. This also included up to 60,000 additional soldiers for the Bundeswehr. If that succeeds in voluntary nature, it would be good. “But my impression is that we will need conscription,” said Spahn.

Australia
Australia abolished compulsory military service in 1972. Instead, there is a voluntary military service for men and women. A special feature is the recruitment of foreigners by the Australian Defense Forces (ADF). For example, New Zealanders, Canadians, British and Americans who have been living in Australia for at least a year can join the ADF. Women have been serving in all areas since 2013, also in combat units. In 2024 they provided just over 20 percent of the armed forces

Duty to compulsory for women?
According to the preliminary report, Spahn replied to the question of the newspaper whether there must also be compulsory military service for women: “If the old military service is used again, it only applies to men. So it is in the Basic Law, otherwise you have to change the constitution. For the next four years I don’t see that.”
