Minnesota: Democratic US politician and her husband shot

In the US state of Minnesota, the democratic politician Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot in a presumably politically motivated attack. Governor Tim Walz confirmed this at a press conference. Hortman sat for the Democratic Party in the regional House of Representatives.

In another attack in the nearby Champlin, another democrat from the state, John Hoffman, and his wife were seriously injured. According to the authorities, both are in medical treatment.

During the later search of the vehicle, investigators found a manifesto in which several officials are named. The security authorities then initiated additional protective measures for people on the list.

Walz, who had run for the office of Vice President in the presidential election last November, visibly moved after the crime: “A conciliatory political debate is the foundation of our democracy. We do not solve our conflicts with gun power.”

He paid tribute to his party colleague Hortman as a “close girlfriend” who “woke up every day with the aim of making this state a little better”. Hortman was once the chair of the parliament in the US state, which she had belonged to since 2004.

US President Donald Trump condemned the attack. He described the crime as “probably a targeted attack on state employees”. The Federal Police FBI and Minister of Justice Pam Bondi were entrusted with the investigation, it said in a statement from the White House, which was published on platform X. “Such cruel violence is not tolerated in the United States,” said Trump, and announced that they are pursuing all those involved in the crime with the full hardness of the law “.
