IFW: Europe’s help for Ukraine has increased significantly

According to the IFW Kiel, the support of the USA is currently missing for the attacked Ukraine. The help from Europe has increased for this.

The Ukraine attacked by Russia recently received significantly more help from Europe than at the beginning of the year. This emerges from a current analysis of the Institute for the World Economy (IFW) Kiel. Military, financial and humanitarian aid from Europe added up to around 20.2 billion euros in March and April, as the institute says. For comparison: in January and February it was around 6.7 billion euros.

According to statistics, the USA has not provided any help since February. The head of the project, Christoph Trebesch, said according to the announcement: “It is remarkable that Europe has closed the gap.” It remains to be seen whether it is a temporary increase. Russia started an invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

At the beginning of March 2025, Donald Trump’s government initially hired the US military aid for Ukraine. At the time, it was said that Trump’s focus was on peace from the White House. The help is therefore exposed to further notice and subjected to a review.

Germany’s share recently rather low

Germany’s help has made 650 million euros since the beginning of April, as can be seen from the announcement. Compared to the same period last year, this corresponds to a decline of around 70 percent.

The federal government no longer publishes detailed information on military aid. According to the IFW Kiel, the latest statistics are not affected by the decision, because the government’s website was only switched off in May.

The Ukraine support tracker of the IFW Kiel records military, financial and humanitarian aid that Ukraine has been promised since January 24, 2022. 41 countries are taken into account, including the EU countries. Data sources are official government agencies and reports of international media.
