Reiner Haseloff is considering pulling away from AfD government
Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff had described the upcoming state election as a “existential decision”. Apparently this also applies to himself.
Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff does not want to live in a federal state in which the AfD represents the state government. “If the AfD came to power, it would really be a reason for me whether I would leave my home after 72 years,” said the CDU politician of the “Bild” newspaper.
If the AfD takes over power in the state parliament, it would be an “unbearable atmosphere” for it, according to Germany’s most serving prime minister. “And that would also ask the fundamental question for my wife and for many in my environment whether you would like to do this.”

The next election was an existential decision, as was going on in Saxony-Anhalt, Haseloff had already explained in the state parliament last week. The next state election will take place in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, 2026. Haseloff has been head of government since 2011 and has so far left open whether he will once again be a top candidate for his party. The AfD has already chosen Co-parliamentary group leader Ulrich Siegmund as top candidate.
The AfD has long been classified as secure right-wing extremists in Saxony-Anhalt. An alliance of the CDU, SPD and FDP is currently ruling in Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD provides the second strongest faction in the state parliament.
