Public service grows to 5.4 million employees

The public service in Germany is growing – especially in education and support. Schools and daycare centers in particular take up massive staff.
Around 5.4 million people in Germany were employed in 2024 after preliminary results in the public service. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this was 95,900 employees (1.8 percent) more than a year earlier.
In 2024, almost 12 percent of all employment in Germany worked in civil service. According to the statistics, there were high growth, especially at schools, universities and day care centers. The data refers to June 30, 2024.
More one million employees in schools
Most people – more than a million – were employed in general education and vocational schools. By mid -2024, the number of employees rose there by 19,500 or 1.9 percent within one year. Of them, 354,800 employees (plus 0.9 percent) and 693,200 civil servants (plus 2.4 percent) were.
Number of educators more than doubled in 15 years
The staff also grew up at municipal day care centers: 289,900 people were employed there in mid -2024 and thus 11,000 (plus 4.0 percent) more than a year earlier. In the long term, the number of educators rose by more than double from 2009 to 2024, as the statisticians said.
The staff at universities, including university clinics, rose by around 14,200 people within one year (plus 2.3 percent). A total of 636,100 people were employed in the university area on June 30, 2024 and around 41 percent more than 15 years earlier.
