The European allies of Ukraine want to put Russia under further sanctions. So far, the US president is on the brake.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has been optimistic that the United States will also increase the pressure on Russia through punitive measures. “I go back to Germany with the careful optimism that there will also be decisions in America in the next few days to impose further sanctions against Russia,” he said on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada.
At the meeting of economically strong western democracies, it was agreed to work on the best possible termination of the Russian war of aggression. “If we have opportunities to get Russia to get to the negotiating table, through military support from Ukraine, but above all through further sanctions against Russia, then we want to perceive these opportunities.”
The EU has just decided on an 18th sanction package against Russia. US President Donald Trump once again expressed skepticism at the summit. “Don’t forget that sanctions cost us a lot of money,” he emphasized. “When I sanction a country, the United States costs a lot of money.”
