According to the law, abortions in England and Wales have been punishable in principle for almost 150 years. That changes now – unlike in Germany.
The British Parliament has launched a change in the law to decriminalize abortions. The deputies voted with a large majority for a change application for a legislative package. In England and Wales, the almost 150 -year -old principle decided by men will change that abortions are always punishable. A similar project had failed in Germany.
So far, abortions in England and Wales have been possible and allowed until the 24th week. However, these are only considered exceptions that should not be pursued under criminal law. Later abortions are only possible under special circumstances, for example if the mother’s life is at stake. The old legal text allows you to impose life penalty for abortions.
Due to the change in the law, the risk of investigations, arrests, criminal prosecution or detention of the women concerned is cleared, said MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who had brought the amendment. The overarching legislative package has not yet been decided, but this is considered a matter of form due to the vast majority of the Labor government party.
The 24-week period should continue to exist, as well as the obligation to show the approval of two doctors. Medical staff who violates the law or partners who try to end pregnancy can continue to be pursued by criminal law.
How are abortions regulated in Germany?
Similar to previous legislation in England and Wales, the German Criminal Code PARAGRAF 218 states that abortions are generally illegal. By exception rules, they are punished without a pregnancy within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy if the woman got advised beforehand. Even if there are certain medical reasons or after rape, stops are possible without making themselves punishable.

A change is not foreseeable at first. Before the Bundestag election in February, the SPD and Greens had campaigned for it, but failed in the Bundestag because of the necessary majority. A draft of more than 300 MPs provided for the abortions to be broken down outside the Criminal Code up to the 12th week after conception.
