The German investigative authorities receive thousands of indications of sexual child abuse every year. The providers have to extinguish them – and usually do this pretty quickly.
When indications of sexual abuse of children on the Internet, a good half of all content on German servers was deleted within a good two days last year. This emerges from the so -called deletion report of the Federal Government for 2024, which has passed the cabinet.
According to this, almost 56 percent of the content hosted at complaints at complaints were deleted within two days of receipt of the reference to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). In the previous year, the quota was significantly higher at around 85 percent. In 2024, however, the proportion of the reported abuse representations, which were removed by the hosting providers within a week, was consistently high.
Less information than in the previous year
The lower quota of deletions cannot be due to the number of symptoms within a short period of time. Because last year, when 19.296, it was forwarded to the hosting service providers hosted in Germany, significantly lower than 2023.
The significant reduction in domestic figures compared to the previous year can be explained with a “mass delivery” in 2023, the report says.
Deletion rate for content abroad lower
Due to the more complex procedure and the larger number of bodies involved, more time is required for deletion abroad abroad, a joint message from the Ministry of Justice and the Interior said. Here the proportion of depictions of abuse that were deleted after one week was below the value of 2023 (57.6 percent) last year. After four weeks, the extinguishing rate was 84.17 percent after 88.2 percent in the previous year.
In 2011, the Bundestag decided to “delete instead of locking” with a large majority. Since then, “children’s pornographic representations” have no longer been hidden behind stop signs on the network, but are completely deleted.
“Every common admission of these acts is another act of violence,” said Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) according to the announcement. “Sexual abuse of children is one of the worst crimes,” said Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD). Anyone who spreads the images of child abuse must be held responsible for criminal law. The Federal Government will introduce mandatory storage of IP addresses to facilitate law enforcement. Because that is often the only investigation approach in the case of internet -related crime.
