“In the event of a health” – Spahn defends masking deals
Jens Spahn once again justifies his approach as Minister of Health in Corona pandemic. He has a conscience, he explains – and speaks of a “century crisis”.
Former Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) justified the controversial procurement of masks during the Corona pandemic with an exceptional situation. Spahn has been under pressure since last week. Media reported on an internal report from the Ministry of Health to deal with the costly mask procurement. The allegations are directed, among other things, that Spahn had given the logistics company Fiege from his Münsterland homeland without tendering an order to procure mask in the volume of 1.5 billion euros.
Spahn spoke of a “century crisis”: “We had no masks, no disinfectant, we were completely unprepared.” The federal government’s crisis team at the time decided that his house should take over the procurement of the masks. He was not aware that there were warnings about the commissioning of Fiege at the time.
Large part of the masks ordered by Jens Spahn are not required
Spahn assumed that Minister of Health Nina Warken (CDU) will inform the Bundestag’s budget committee about the test report as announced next week. However, there should only be a report on the report, the complete examination should not be passed on. Spahn also referred to personal rights at the time, who are mentioned in the report.
The 170 -page report was created on behalf of the former Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) by the special representative Margaretha Sudhof. NDR, WDR and “Süddeutscher Zeitung” reported excerpts from it last week.
Spahn guaranteed an unlimited decrease in masks at a price of 4.50 euros per FFP2 mask at the beginning of the pandemic. Later, the ministry sometimes refused to pay, including reference to faulty or late deliveries. Ultimately, a large part of the masks was not needed. Suppliers have complained against the federal government in recent years. It is about hundreds of cases with a value in dispute in the billions.
