The neighbors of Russia say goodbye to an international agreement for the ostracism of people. The next time it is: Finland.
After the Baltic NATO countries Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, Finland from the Ottawa Convention also increases to ban anti-person mines. The parliament in Helsinki voted with a view to the perceived threat from the eastern neighbor Russia with a clear majority of 157 to 18 votes. According to the radio broadcaster Yle, the step comes into force six months after receipt of a corresponding Finnish decision at the United Nations.
The Finnish government had already announced the preparation of the contract exit at the beginning of April. She also received encouragement from the parliamentary external committee. The Finnish military believes that it needs people’s mines to defend the country.
Anti-personion mines contract has been in effect since 1999
The agreement on the prohibition of use, storage, manufacture and passing on anti -person mines and their destruction has been in effect since March 1999. Finland signed the agreement in 2012. Important states such as the USA, Russia, China and India have not joined the contract.
Finland, which borders on Russia over a length of 1340 kilometers, had decided in 2022 under the impression of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine as well as Sweden to become a member of NATO. In April 2023, Finland was included in the defense alliance, and Sweden followed almost a year later.
