Rome in question of NATO
Rome is one of the founding members of the western defense alliance. But now one of the most important ministers of Prime Minister Meloni is questioning the alliance.
Founding member Italy basically questions the western defense alliance shortly before the next NATO summit. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said in the northern Italian city of Padua: “NATO no longer has any right to exist.” The times would have changed. “The USA and the EU are no longer the center of the world. NATO has to adapt to the changed times.” In order to continue to guarantee peace and mutual defense, she has to work with the global south.
As one of twelve countries, Italy has belonged to the North Atlantic Pact since it was founded in 1949. In the middle of next week, the 32 NATO members will meet in the presence of US President Donald Trump for a summit in the Hague. Like Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Crosetto is a member of the right -wing government party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) and is considered a close confidante.
Criticism of the EU
At his appearance at the University of Padua, Crosetto also commented on the role of the EU: “We often talk as if we were still living 30 years ago. But everything has changed. We talk about Europe as if Europe counts. Maybe there could have been a political role that did not exist. If there had been a foreign policy or a defense. But his time is over.”
Meloni came to the government in 2022 with considerable criticism of the EU in Rome. Since then, however, she has proven to be a reliable partner, also in Ukraine policy. The Fratelli chairman is at the head of a coalition of three rights and conservative parties.
