Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach wants to revoke the competence of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) over the recovered status. “I would like to make decisions myself and directly about far-reaching decisions such as the status of those who have recovered. Otherwise I bear the political responsibility for the actions of others,” says Lauterbach of the Bild newspaper. The RKI was heavily criticized in mid-January because it had short-term reduced the convalescent status from six to three months, thereby changing access to gastronomy and events overnight for millions of Germans. RKI boss Lothar Wieler was then violently attacked by the FDP, among others. However, Lauterbach had placed himself in front of the head of the authorities and assured him of his trust. “I might answer the political part. So, Mr. Wieler has my full trust. He’s sitting here again and the FDP, I’ll leave that uncommented. For me it’s definitely crucial that we work well together here. And this morning is it’s another demonstration of that collaboration.” The controversial shortening of the convalescent status should also be reversed again, according to a draft resolution for the federal-state consultations that became known in advance.
