According to a survey, a large part of the people in Germany would like more protection against nuclear weapons. The data was collected to Iran before the United States attacked.
Almost two thirds of the Germans are for the establishment of their own European nuclear shield. In a survey by the Forsa opinion research institute for the magazine “International Politics”, 64 percent of the respondents were correct if the Europeans in the future would have a nuclear protective shield for deterrent. Less than a third – 29 percent – would not find that right.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had already announced before taking office to seek the conversation with the nuclear powers of France and Great Britain and to advise them with them about their own nuclear deterrence of the Europeans. The aim of such a European deterrent should be to become more independent of the United States’ Nuclear Protection Date in the face of the unpredictable policy of US President Donald Trump.
The survey data was raised on June 12th and 13th-and thus before the current escalation in the war between Israel and Iran with the intervention of the US military on the side of Israel.
Majorities for European nuclear skirts in all groups surveyed
According to the Forsa survey, majorities for their own European nuclear umbrella can be found in all population and voters- which is rare for foreign policy issues. Differences are more likely to be nuances. With 52 percent (40 percent against it), approval in East Germany is less pronounced than in West Germany, where it is 66 percent (27 percent against it). When looking at age, it is striking that the over 45-year-olds are below the average of 58.5 percent, but the over 45-year-olds (67.5 percent).
At 78 percent, voters of the Greens are particularly common that Berlin, together with Paris and London, should strive for their own nuclear deterrence, followed by supporters of CDU/CSU with 71 percent. The approval of SPD voters (65 percent) is less large, but still above average. The supporters of the AfD (54 percent) and the party DIE LINKE (52 percent) are scarce but still absolute majorities.
