North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has once again come out in public. The occasion was the birthday of his father Kim Jong Il, who died in 2011 and would have turned 80 on Wednesday. North Korea’s state television broadcast images showing Kim Jong Un and thousands of people gathered in front of a statue of Kim Jong-Il in the alpine town of Samjiyon on Tuesday. There were also pictures of a concert and fireworks. Dubbed the “Holy Land of the Revolution” by state media, Samjiyon is near the border with China and Mount Paektu, the sacred mountain where Kim’s family says they have their roots. Most recently, North Korea made headlines with missile tests that are actually prohibited under UN resolutions. At the end of January, Pyongyang is said to have even tested a medium-range missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
