European Football Championship
Völler is looking forward to the U21 “dream final”
Germany’s young football players meet England in the final of the European Championship. From the point of view of sports director Rudi Völler it is a worthy duel. For the national coach, he has “another card”.
The German U21 national team wants to crown the European Championship in Slovakia with the fourth European Championship title. “You are now in the final and then logically also want to become a European champion,” said DFB sports director Rudi Völler after the 3-0 selection of the German Football Association in the semi-finals against France.
Völler: Hope that all of Germany is pressing your thumb
Opponents of the German team around the goalkeeper Nick Woltemade, who was once again chosen as the player of the game, will be defending champion England on Saturday (9:00 p.m./SAT.1) in Bratislava. “Dream finals. Germany against England – more is not possible. I’m looking forward to it. It will certainly be a big game and hopefully we will win – 2: 1,” said Völler. “I hope that all of Germany keeps my fingers crossed at the weekend.”
Völler emphasized that he would “certainly” follow the game in the Slovak capital alongside national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “I still have a card for him,” joked Völler.
Trainer sure: personal honor for Woltemade secondary
In the victory against France, Woltemade scored his sixth tournament goal, Nelson Weiper and Brajan Gruda. Woltemade is well on the way to becoming the fourth German top scorer: the 23-year-old new international of VfB Stuttgart leads the list of goal scoring.
Honoring the tournament player is also very possible. “As I know Nick, the only goal he has to become European champion – and everything he then takes would be nice,” said U21 national trainer Antonio di Salvo.
Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu acted outstandingly in the victory against the French series of attacks around the former Bayern star Mathys Tel. “That was an incredible game of ours,” said the Freiburg, who, with his 21st international for the U21 Manuel Neuer, left behind him as goalkeeper with the most missions. “We’re not finished yet. We still have a big goal.”
However, defense chief Max Rosenfelder will no longer be able to actively contribute to this goal. The Freiburger had to be replaced in the initial phase, and the great German success sheds bitter tears on the evening of the great German success. “It makes me sad to see him cry. It hurts,” said Di Salvo. “Now we have to watch that we collect our strength and play a great final for Max – and win the final.”
