The selection of the German Athletics Association achieved third place at the team European Championship. Two stars convince on the end of the end. The defending champion wins confidently.
The German athletes took third place at the European Team European Championship in Madrid. Thanks to many points, the selection also won a total of 397 points thanks to long jumping star Malaika Mihambo and javelin throwing ace Julian Weber. At the European Championships two years ago in Chorzów in Poland, the team also reached third place.
This time Germany was intercepted by Poland (405.5 points) on the last of four competition days. The overall victory went to Italy, which defended his title with 431.5 points.
Weber wins, Mihambo second
Weber confidently prevailed in the men’s javelin throw at 85.15 meters. The 30-year-old did not come close to his world year best of 91.06 meters in Doha in mid-May. However, he won with a lead almost five meters and even missed the last three of the six attempts. According to Karl Bebendorf, Weber provided the third individual success in the Team European Championship over the 3,000 meters of obstacle and Caroline Joyeux.
Mihambo finished second with 6.84 meters behind the victorious Italian Larissa Iapichino (6.92 meters). For the Olympic champion of 2021, the vastness meant the best outdoor seasonal performance. The increase also gives hope for the World Cup in Tokyo in September.
Sprinter Junk over 200 meters with personal best performance
Sophia Junk showed a strong performance over the 200 meters, who improved her personal record by 0.34 seconds in 22.53 seconds and thus also undercut the World Cup standard (22.57 seconds). The Spaniard Jaël Bestué (22.19 seconds) won with a championship record ahead of Hélène Parisot (22.42 seconds) from France.
Also third was high jumper Imke Onnen, who crossed 1.94 meters and had to give up only the Olympic champion Jaroslawa Mahutschich (2.00 meters) from Ukraine and the second -placed Polish Maria Zodzik (1.97 meters).
The event in Madrid was the eleventh edition of the Team European Championship. The best 16 nations took part and sent an athlete, an athlete or a season into the 37 competitions. The better the placement, the more points there was for the team.
