Red Bull experiences a disaster in Austria. A fifth World Cup title is far away for Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen wasted no thoughts to the World Cup after his end at the Formula 1 race in Austria. “We are not fighting for the World Cup anyway,” said the champion of the past four years in the TV broadcaster Sky after the Grand Prix in Spielberg.

A crash, which was indebted to Mercedes Teenager Kimi Antonelli, for which he immediately apologized, gave the Dutch Red Bull pilot prematurely ended in the opening round. In the driver’s ranking, Verstappen already has 61 points behind the World Cup leader Oscar Piatri from McLaren after eleven out of 24 races.

Frustration at Verstappen, Marko and Horner

“This is a very black day, the deficit is almost unrestricted,” said motorsport consultant Helmut Marko after the disaster at the Red Bull home game about the dwindling World Cup chances of Verstappen. “If something extraordinary does not happen, we have to assume that the World Cup is gone.”

Team boss Christian Horner described the Grand Prix as “a home race to forget”. He estimates the World Cup position similar to Marko. “The distance is considerable,” he admitted. “It looks between two candidates after a competition.” And these are called Piatri and Norris.

Horner also recalled that his Red Bull team won every race 18 months ago. “I still believe that we have strength and depth in this team, which we have unfortunately not seen in the performance,” he said. Red Bull has to work more easily “clever”.

Verstappen defiantly: “My mentality does not change”

Industry leader McLaren is a class of its own and has constructed a car that protects the tires like no other team. Red Bull just can’t get along. Therefore, the prospects of Verstappen to a fifth title in succession are only vague.

“We always try to do our best. My mentality does not change. We have won many times in the past,” said Verstappen with a little distance from his end in Spielberg. “Sometimes you have to accept that you don’t win and we just try to do our best.” But that also no longer sounds like a World Cup title.
